Student Visa Australia

Student Visa conditions

Every student visa has got some conditions/restrictions imposed on it. These conditions are stated on the letter of approval you would have received with your visa or on the visa label. The visa conditions for students on scholarships may vary from other student visas. Make sure you read these conditions and comply with them all the time. Non-compliance to these conditions can lead to your visa being cancelled. If your visa is cancelled, you may not be allowed to return to Australia for the next three years.

The organisation that manages all the affairs related to student visa is The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). If you have any questions regarding your visa and its conditions, you will need to contact them.

One of the most common breaches that occur of the student visa condition is the one relating to working hours allowed. Many international students work longer hours than permitted. Whether the breach occurs through negligence or intentionally, DIAC takes a very grim view of the student involved.

Other common breaches include not notifying the department if you changed your course or the university and overstaying your visa length due to extension of the course.

If you intend to change your course or enrol in another course after the first course, you should contact the nearest DIAC office and seek assistance in the procedure you need to follow. Be aware that if you remain in Australia beyond the duration of your current student visa, you will need to contact DIAC and ask for extension on your visa. Failure to do so may result in you being sent back to your home country and be banned from returning to Australia for three years.
