Returning home

In a funny way, the country that gave you a cultural shock on your arrival, may now give you a sense of home feeling when you plan to leave it. The impact of living in a different country while you study is underestimated by many students.

It is hard to realize and admit that your stay in Australia might have changed you as a person. These feelings are quite normal among international students.

There are lots of things you can do to ensure that your move back to your home country is as smooth as possible. First thing is to admit your country might not be the same as you left it. If you have changed during your stay in Australia, chances are that your country, your friends and few family members would have also adjusted to the changing times.

Many institutes conduct ‘returning home’ seminars for international students packing to go home. These seminars will cover issues you may face when you go back to your home country such as getting in touch with your old friends, finding a job, adjusting to the weather etc.

These seminars will also mention how to receive your exam result for the course you just completed and may also cover topics such as how to file your last tax return in Australia and how to receive the superannuation that has been saved on your behalf while you were working.

Many institutions also offer Alumni Associations so that you can stay in touch with the friends you have made at your course. These associations will not only provide you networking opportunities with people who have come from around the world, but will also provide you support if you face any difficulty settling down in your home country.
